Quality Certifications ISO9001 and AS9100 and Why They are Important

Quality Certifications ISO9001 and AS9100 and Why They are Important

Within the industry of dry lubricant coatings, suppliers maintain a variety of distinctive certifications. ISO9001 and AS9100 are two frequently obtained certifications earned by organizations that meet specific quality requirements.

ISO9001 was developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Companies that wish to certify must satisfy the standard’s requirements, demonstrating they have implemented a system for ensuring a consistent, quality product or service that meets customer and regulatory requirements. That system is called a quality management system (QMS).  The standard can apply to any company of any size in any industry.

AS9100 was developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). This standard is intended for use by organizations that design, develop, or provide aviation, space, and defense products and services.  It includes all the ISO9001 requirements plus added obligations for the aerospace industry.

Both standards require that organizations employ key principles of quality management such as customer focus, a process approach, continual improvement, evidence-based decision making, and risk-based thinking. Key to the operation of an effective quality management system is the use of the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle.

As part of the PDCA approach, organizations define both individual processes and a complete QMS that:
1) establishes objectives and plans activities to meet objectives, 2) carries out what was planned, 3) monitors success in completing planned activities and meeting objectives, and 4) acts to improve where necessary.

Clearly, customers benefit from these requirements; they result in an increased likelihood of procuring a consistently high-quality product or service.  Third party validation certifies suppliers:
·      implement a quality management system
·      adhere to their system
·      are effective in meeting customer as well as standard requirements
Such requirements allow buyers to confidently purchase the vendor’s products or services. But the customer is not the only party that benefits. Because the standard requires suppliers to focus efforts on understanding customer needs, expectations are likely met on both sides of the purchasing exchange. Customers often return with additional business and recommend the supplier to their peers. The QMS process also sets the stage for vendors to continually improve, make decisions based on evidence and data, increase efficiencies, engage team members, and strengthen supplier/purchaser relationships.

ISO9001 and AS9100 certified companies are audited by third parties on an annual basis.  Auditors evaluate quality manuals and procedures and inspect systems first-hand before issuing a current certification.  An auditor can deny a company for certification for several reasons such as excluding important information about company structure, the improper implementation of a procedure, or inconsistencies in their documentation. In these instances, the auditor writes up the necessary corrective action and the company can re-apply after the problem is corrected.
